Ten years ago Waikakahi Stream in South Canterbury New Zealand was in bad shape. Today, thanks to the local community, farmers, scientists and environmentalists, it looks like a different river. The water is cleaner, the fish are healthier and more plentiful and river banks are stable and full of plants and insects. It shows what can be done when people work together.
This initiative is part of the NIWA-led Aquatic Rehabilitation programme, which is delivered in collaboration with Cawthron Institute, Environment Canterbury, DairyNZ, Fish & Game, and the broader Dairy Best Practice Catchments Project also involving AgResearch.
